Pfizer and Moderna COVID Vaccines: Mismatch & Similarities

The United States has approved two vaccines within a week for emergency medical use to prevent an outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The country with the highest death toll from the pandemic initially approved vaccines made by Pfizer and BioNtech.

Then on Friday, the country approved the Moderna's COVID vaccine. News agency Reuters highlighted the similarities and differences between the two vaccines.

Match between two vaccines

Messenger RNA (mRNA) technology has been used in both vaccines. It contains instructions for making proteins in human cells, which imitates parts of the coronavirus.

These guidelines encourage the human body's immune system to function and turn the body into an anti-viral vaccine factory. This vaccine does not contain any real virus.

Both Pfizer-BioNtech and Moderna vaccines target coronavirus-like spikes on the surface of the coronavirus. Those spikes break down the strong cells of the human body.

The two vaccines are almost equally effective in preventing coronavirus.

Pfizer and BioNtech vaccines are 95 per cent effective in the third stage of testing. Whereas Moderna's vaccines are 94%.

Both of the vaccines are given in two doses. After giving the first dose of Pfizer vaccine, the second dose has to be interrupted for 21 days and in the case of Moderna, it has to be interrupted for 28 days.

Those who received the two vaccines during the test had very low rates of illness.

The data submitted by the two organizations to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shows that vaccine recipients began receiving partial protection against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the first dose of the vaccine.

The discrepancy between the two vaccines

The main difference between the two vaccines is the issue of temperature in the long run.

The Pfizer vaccine must be kept at a temperature of minus 70 degrees Celsius. Once melted, it can only be kept in the refrigerator for five days.

Also, special containers with dry ice are required for transporting the vaccine.

On the other hand, the Moderna vaccine will be kept at a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius for up to six months. Once melted it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Side effects

No severe long-term side effects were observed during the large-scale trial of both vaccines. However, a few short-term side effects have been observed.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, were not compared directly. According to trials, Moderna vaccine has a slightly higher side effect.

Symptoms of fatigue, headache, and fever may appear on the first day or second day after the second dose of vaccine. This symptom is more common in people under 65 years of age.

The Pfizer vaccine did not cause any side effects in humans. However, in the United States and the United Kingdom, severe allergies have been reported in some cases as a side effect since the introduction of the vaccine.

Two in the UK and a health worker in Alaska have spoken of allergies after being vaccinated by Pfizer.

The UK Drug Enforcement Administration recommends that people with anaphylaxis or severe allergies to certain foods or drugs not be vaccinated.

Last solution is "wear a mask"?

A variant (strain) of the coronavirus first identified in the United Kingdom is being seen in various countries around the world. This information was given in the report of BBC online on Sunday.

This new type of corona has been identified in various European countries as well as Canada and Japan.

The Corona strain has spread to Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and France in Europe.

Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated during this time. This list includes Australia, South Africa, Lebanon, Singapore, Thailand. This strain was eventually identified in Japan and Canada.

Japan first reported that at least five people had been diagnosed with new types of the corona.

They all recently came to the country from the UK. Two more COVID patient were later identified in the country. One of them has been infected locally.

Japan has banned most non-resident foreign nationals from entering the country for a month since Monday.

This strain of a couple has been identified in Ontario, Canada.

However, no history of their journey was known. Apart from that, they did not go near anyone at high risk.

The United Kingdom reported the new strain infection on 14 December. Scientists say that this new strain spreads faster and faster than the previous strain.

Last week, several countries around the world imposed travel bans in the United Kingdom due to the introduction of a new type of corona.

Anyway, more information is needed to understand the exact picture of how effective the two vaccines are in preventing viral infections.

Although the two vaccines are very effective in patients with symptoms of COVID and critically ill patients, it is not yet known whether the patient has been infected with the new vaccine.

Until that is known, experts think the mask will be needed. This will ensure that vaccinated people do not spread the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, corona vaccine is being applied in European countries from Sunday.
