The pros and cons of the Keto diet

 The most talked about diet trend right now is the Keto diet. This diet is effective in controlling weight as well as reducing blood sugar levels. For this reason, diabetic patients are leaning towards it.


There was no cure for epilepsy or convulsions in 1911. At that time doctors used to treat this disease with Keto diet. At that time patients were not fed, it formed ketone bodies in the body. This would reduce epilepsy.

Since the first epilepsy drug, phenabarbital, was discovered in 1934, its popularity has been declining. Then again in 1994, in some cases, it was not possible to treat the disease with drugs, then the Keto diet appeared again. 

At this time it was seen that the patient is losing weight as a result of this diet. But now in all countries the abuse of this diet is more than the proper use.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Many are following the Keto diet without knowing about the long-term effects and side effects. The disadvantages outweigh the benefits.

The Keto diet contains 10 percent carbohydrates, 60 percent fat and 20 percent protein. But a healthy diet should have 20 percent fat and 60 percent fiber. 

Reducing carbohydrates in the keto diet results in the body's metabolism shifting from carbohydrates to fats. This produces an acid in the body, called keto acid. It has long-term or short-term effects on various metabolisms in the body.

There are about four types of keto diets, and the efficacy and results of each have been studied in thousands of people for over 25 years. The results of this study were published in the Lancet Journal. It found that those who consumed 60 to 70 percent and those who consumed 20 to 30 percent carbohydrates had a much higher risk of death. 

But those who consume 50 percent carbohydrates have lived a much healthier life. The weight loss at the beginning of the Keto diet is the weight of the water that breaks down glycogen. In addition, when keto acid is increased in the body, phosphate loss from the bones to prevent it. Glycogen, water and bone loss can lead to sudden weight loss in the early stages of the Keto diet.

Many diabetic patients have faced various physical problems by following the Keto diet as they wish. Inflammation of the pancreas, kidney failure or kidney stones, body salt differences, which is called electrolyte imbalance - such problems are more common.

 Many people have heard or read somewhere that the Keto diet does not require medication for diabetes and cholesterol, they have suddenly stopped the medication. As a result, their diabetes has increased and they are being admitted to the hospital with a disease called ketoacidosis.

According to a study conducted from 1999 to 2011 found that those who followed the Keto diet had a 50 per cent increased risk of dying from heart attack, 50 per cent from stroke and 35 per cent from cancer.

Role of Keto diet in diabetes control

According to experts, in low income countries, everyone has not the ability to spend a lot of money. So the best way to prevent diabetes in this country is prevention. However, people walk to control it after they have diabetes. If you walk to prevent, 84 out of 100 people have no risk of getting the disease.

And even if someone does have diabetes, it is important to follow a proper diet to control it, which requires at least 50 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein and 20 percent fat to stay healthy. 

In addition, smoking should be avoided and the right amount of sleep. If you don't sleep properly for 8 hours, it will be difficult to control diabetes, heart, kidneys and eyes. And after doing everything, if diabetes is not under control, you have to take shelter of medication.

Although the level of insulin in the body is low in the early part of the Keto diet, the side effects of this diet start to appear within 2 to 4 weeks. Awareness needs to be raised about the recovery of a diabetic patient not just for two weeks but for a long time. November 14 of this year was World Diabetes Day. 

Many awareness programs have been organized in the media and social media on the occasion of the day. Experts there have put more emphasis on following proper eating habits. Awareness should create among patients as well as physicians.
