Contagion : the movie which was foretold about 'COVID-19'

A terrible virus is circulating from China all over the world' -The Hollywood movie 'Contagion' was released in 2011 with such a story. The context was made with a number of stars, but it was the 71st highest-grossing film of the year.

The film stars Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Michael Douglas.

Written by T. J. Burns and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The film begins with a woman returning from Hong Kong to Minnesota, USA, with a strange disease. The woman died within a few days as well as her youngest son.
But these two deaths are just beginning. The whole picture shows how the disease is spreading around the world, turning into a pandemic, and the role of all other concerned authorities, including the World Health Organization, in dealing with it.

The film also showed how rumours and fears are disseminated faster than viruses in such situations, and the panic destroys the controlled and chained lifestyle of mankind.

In the last scene of 'Contagion', it is revealed that the imaginary 'MEV-1' virus originated from a pig, which ate the leftover banana pieces thrown by a bat.

Contagion : the movie foretold about 'COVID19'

The bat had earlier fled from its habitat, a palm tree when deforestation began in a Chinese forest. The affected pig was slaughtered and a cook prepared it for cooking. But in the middle of his call, he takes his hand out of the pig's mouth, shakes hands without washing it, and shakes hands with a woman named Beth Emhoff, who later carries the virus to the United States. Beth thus became the 'index case' (the first person to be infected with the virus).

What exactly is the origin of the novel coronavirus in the world today is still a mystery to scientists? Even then, like the 'Contagion' movie, some epidemiologists consider bat to be the primary source of the coronavirus.

Now if we look back at the novel Coronavirus, many people are talking about a wet market in Wuhan, China, as it is the primary source. In these, wet markets of China, different kinds of animals are packed, kept alive or dead for sale.
In the film 'Contagion', the affected people start with fever and heavy sweating, headache, dry throat and cough. They also have convulsions, dizziness, and foaming at the mouths on the eve of death.

The disease caused by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has almost the same symptoms, although convulsions or foaming at the mouth are the exceptions. Early symptoms of Covid-19 include a fever of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit, cough or difficulty breathing.

Similar to Covid-19, MEV-1 in 'Contagion' is a respiratory disease, which is spread by sneezing, coughing, or any other type of saliva.

In the picture, it is said that an average person puts his hand in his mouth two to three thousand times a day consciously or unknowingly. And while awake, he also touches various objects such as door handles, elevator buttons, etc., which may contain the presence of the virus.

RO means the number that the other persons are infected by the victim. In the movie 'Contagion', the RO of the fictional MEV-1 virus was more than 4. We have to say we are lucky compared to him. Because according to the World Health Organization, the RO of novel coronavirus is between 2 and 2.5. On the other hand, according to a study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the United States, the novel coronavirus between 2 and 2.2.

Contagion : the movie foretold about 'COVID19'

In 'Contagion', the fatality rate among those infected with the virus was 25 to 30 per cent.

Although no official figures have been released on the fatality rate of people infected with the novel coronavirus, according to many private Covid-19 trackers, the death rate from the novel coronavirus has risen to 1.8 to 3.4% per cent so far (CDC, March 26)

As seen in 'Contagion', blogger Alan Krumwiede began promoting a medicine called Forsythia as an antidote to the virus, although no research has confirmed its authenticity.

When Alan announces via video message that he has been infected with the virus but has since recovered from taking Forsythia, and writes about it regularly on his blog, the general public begins to stumble into the pharmacy believing it. In just a few days, he gained 12 million followers on his blog, and he became a millionaire.

Meanwhile, even though no definite antidote for Covid-19 disease has been found so far, the names of new antidotes are being heard from different quarters after a few days. Not even saltwater spray or cow urine was left out. However, it is good to know that Forsythia presented in the film 'Contagion' was a hoax.

CDC researcher and scientist in the film 'Contagion' Ally Hextall said that testing, clinical trials, large-scale production and distribution can take several months, or even a whole year, to develop a vaccine for the virus. Later, however, he was able to reduce the duration of the test by testing himself with the vaccine.

Infectious disease experts, meanwhile, say it usually takes 8 to 10 years to develop such a vaccine. However, the World Health Organization, the United States and other countries around the world are working hard to develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus in the shortest possible time. It is a ray of hope for us that, the most promising period so far is September of this year.

An example of how a pandemic can affect global life is found in 'Contagion'. As seen there, a virus changed the whole of society. In the pursuit of survival, people become as violent and ruthless as beasts.

They continue to ransack pharmacies, banks and shops. It became impossible for the police to stop such terrorism, and martial law was imposed to prevent people from moving from one area to another.

Contagion : the movie foretold about 'COVID19'

Our real-life has not become so miserable yet, but the question remains as to how long it will take for that to happen. In the film 'Contagion' we saw panic buying, which we have already seen worldwide. Again, incidents like vandalism for food have not been seen in the developed world yet, but in third world countries, vandalism and snatching of relief vehicles have already started.

Most importantly, the image of human selfishness that emerged in 'Contagion' is slowly becoming evident in our society as well. Despite a large number of poor people around, many have resorted to stealing relief food. In addition, in such a situation, we can feel the horrors of spreading false news in the media.
There are many similarities between cinema and the reality of today's world.
